RE: Substituting Catalyst 2916M for 3550

Actually, it is an XL, WS-C2916M-XL and it can trunk. Caveat: You can only
trunk on the WS-X2914-XL-V card; not on the fixed ports. I verified this
last evening.

Here's a link:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/50.shtml

Cat2916M(config)#int fa 1/1
Cat2916M (config-if)#switchport trunk encap ?
dot1q Interface uses only 801.1q trunking encapsulation when trunking
isl Interface uses only ISL trunking encapsulation when trunking

And, you can configure multiple VLANS on the trunk port. See below sample:

interface FastEthernet1/1
 switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
 switchport multi vlan 1-3

You can also apply priority list and custom queue lists to the ports. I
supposed you could create QoS policies that way, but not quite the mapping
feature I was seaking.

Oh well, guess I am S.O.L.!

Mark,

I think you're stuck. I've never heard of a way of upgrading. Even if
you could add more memory, there's a good chance that the hardware ASICs,
etc are different and wouldn't run the XL code. You can't create trunks
with the 4 mb switches either. Personally, I'd probably get rid of it, and
look for an XL. If I remember right, if it says 'XL Series' on the front,
it's an 8 mb switch. They all say XL on the back though by the serial
number. Can anyone back me up on this?

Thanks,
