AFAIK, the only way to be *SURE* of what you have is to look at the show
version output from the switch and look at the model number. The
outside shells look the same.
I don't know of any way to upgrade the hardware of a 4MB RAM/2MB Flash
switch with more RAM/Flash.

Understanding Memory Amounts and Supported Image Categories
Listed below are switch memory amounts and supported images.
Original Edition Catalyst 2900 Series XL Switches (2 MB Flash, 4 MB
DRAM)
Upgrade these switches to one of the following:
-original Catalyst 2900 Series XL Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2.8SA6
software, or
-earlier Catalyst 2900 Series XL original software
Below are the model numbers for the original edition XL series switches:
WS-C2908-XL
WS-C2916M-XL
WS-C2924-XL
WS-C2924C-XL
Standard/Enterprise Edition Catalyst 2900 Series XL Switches (4 MB
Flash, 8 MB DRAM)
Upgrade these switches to one of the following:
Catalyst 2900 Series XL Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0
standard/enterprise software, or
earlier Catalyst 2900 Series XL standard/enterprise software
Below are the model numbers for the standard/enterprise edition Catalyst

Mark,
I think you're stuck. I've never heard of a way of upgrading. Even
if you could add more memory, there's a good chance that the hardware
ASICs, etc are different and wouldn't run the XL code. You can't create
trunks with the 4 mb switches either. Personally, I'd probably get rid
of it, and look for an XL. If I remember right, if it says 'XL Series'
on the front, it's an 8 mb switch. They all say XL on the back though
by the serial number. Can anyone back me up on this?
Thanks,
