DLSW Backup Peer

I just need someone to verify my understanding of the purpose of the
DLSW Backup Peer.

Initially, I thought that it was used to provide a backup peer for a
given network. If this were the case, then the primary and backup peers
would have to always be connected to the same LAN where the end stations
reside.

I quickly realized that there are several examples on CCO and in my
reading materials that show the primary and backup peers clearly not
connected to the same network.

So, I must assume that the primary and backup peers do not need to be
connected to the same LAN, but simply have the same reachability. That
is to say they must have the same, or similar, remote peer statements.
It does me no good to configure a backup if that backup cannot provide
connectivity to the same end stations provided by the primary peer.

Can someone verify or correct me if I am wrong?

Thanks,

Joe Martin
