Jay,

You need to issue the command against a classful route in order for the
static route not to appear. There are many references to this in the
GroupStudy archives.

Please see the following for additional information:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk365/technologies_tech_note09186a0080
094374.shtml

From the article: "The ip default-network command is classful, which means
if the router has a route to the subnet indicated by this command, it
installs the route to the major net. At this point neither network has been
flagged as the default network. The ip default-network command must be
issued again, using the major net, in order to flag the candidate default
route."

Subject: default-network with RIP

Can someone please explain the ip default-network command with RIP?

On some routers, it adds the #ip default-network command into the
configuration and then advertises a default to other RIP Routers. On other
routers, it just adds a static route into the config, and doesn't really do
anything with the * candidate or gateway of last resort. I'm obviously
confused about something.. And then I can't get the static route out of the
config either!
