Also just looked up on Cisco website in the release notes and you will
need the latest greatest version, 12.1(11)EA1 code. BGP supported was
added as of this version. Not available in the prior releases.

I was running a older version of IOS that did not support BGP. I
upgraded
this morning and am up and running.

I am running BGP on a 3550 with EMI on this version of IOS:
c3550-i5q3l2-mz.121-11.EA1.bin.

Do you have 'ip routing' enabled? Just a guess. I haven't tried it.
