STP on 3550

I've configuring the STP in the C3550.
The config guide mentioned the STP is enabled for vlan1 by default.
But I can't find any information using below command.

Cat3550#sh spanning-tree (summary)

No spanning tree instances exist.

Cat3550#sh spanning-tree vlan 1

Spanning tree instance for vlan 1 does not exist.

So I made one more vlan 100 and enabled the STP on it.
But it brought the same result, nothing information.

Spanning tree instance for bridge 100 does not exist.

What's wrong here?
