I am not too familiar with the 3550, but wouldn't you on one switch give a
command (this is for 6500 but maybe similiar) along the lines of
set spantree root for each odd vlan on switch 1 and set spantree root
secondary for each even on switch 1 and then the opposite on switch 2. set
spantree root for all even vlans and set spantree root secondary for all
odd.
