This new search engine really rocks...

"3550 does not support client side CGMP like the Cat5k, however
it does support CGMP on the server side when acting as a multicast
router. See this link for details:

http://cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/1219ea1/3550scg/sw
mcast.htm#xtocid16

For L2 client functionality, 3550 uses IGMP snooping and
Multicast VLAN Registration (MVR). IGMP snooping is enabled by default.
See this link for more detail:

igmp.htm"

Edward,

Throw your preconceived notions about switches out the window.
Think of this "switch" as a multiport router. CGMP is supported from
the server side, the same as saying "ip cgmp" on your router's Ethernet
interface. If you were to connect this switch to another access layer
switch such as a Cat5k, and run CGMP, the 3550 would be acting as the
multicast router in this model.

Host A sends IGMP join to 3550 about group X
3550 sends CGMP message to 5000 about host A joining group X
5000 adds group X to the cam table of host A's corresponding port

3550 == multicast router
