Louis: The only configuration required for inserting into the 3920 is:
interface TokenRing0
no ip address
ring-speed 16 (or 4)
end
You do not need to configure a ring for insertion. Even if you have the
wrong ring specified the interface
should insert. You just won't be able to contact other hosts on the ring.
There could be several reasons for the flapping condition:
a. there is a speed mismatch
1. the 3920 port is set to one fixed speed and you have configured
another or you
have not configured a ring-speed as mentioned in another reply..
2. there is another station on the same ring set to a different
speed (beaconing condition).
b. the 3920 port is set to HX/FX station and router is HX port.
The token-ring interface is failing in the lobe test phase of inserting.
This is well before the Parameter Server is contacted.
The phases are:
Lobe Test - physical insertion - checks error rate and speed
Monitor Check - checks for active monitor on the ring
Duplicate Address Check - checks for unique MAC address
Neighbor Notification - learns neighbor address
Request Initialization - gets parameters from Ring Parameter Server
Look at the port menu on the 3920 to check speed and port type - best to
leave both for Auto.
Example below has a fixed speed of 16 and auto Operation-mode.
Token Ring Port Configuration - Port 7
TrBRF trbrf-default Enabled Yes
TrCRF trcrf-default Status Inserted
Media Type RJ-45 MTU 4472
Media Speed 16 Mbps Force AC Bits on SR Frames No
Max Explorer Rate 5000 Early Token Release Yes
Operation Mode A-HDX port Priority Threshold 3
Forwarding Mode store & forward Min Transmit Priority 4
Error High Threshold 10 Cfg Loss Threshold 8
Error Low Threshold 1 Cfg Loss Sampling Interval 1
Error Sampling Interval 10
A successful insertion looks like this (deb token events):
R4(config-if)#no shu
1w2d: TR0: reset from 324F5F8
1w2d: TR0: txtmr: 0x0, msclk: 0x328ED098, qt: 0x32706480 (1993752ms)
1w2d: TR0 starting.
1w2d: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface TokenRing0, changed state to initializing
R4(config-if)#
1w2d: TR0 receive SRB_FREE, state=2, if_state=6
1w2d: TR0 receive SRB_FREE, state=2, if_state=7ring mode = 0
1w2d: TR0: modified open w/ option 100
1w2d: TR0: Interface is alive, phys. addr 0008.de81.3d25setting functional
addre
ss w/ 8000000
setting group address w/ 80000000
ring mode = 0
1w2d: TR0: modified open w/ option 100
1w2d: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface TokenRing0, changed state to up
1w2d: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface TokenRing0, changed
state
to up
And a failed insertion (either wrong speed or wrong HX/FX station/port
setting) looks like this:
R4(config-if)#ring 4 (speed mismatch - port on 3920 is set for 16)
R4(config-if)#
1w2d: To0: Interface ring speed is 4
no shu
1w2d: TR0: reset from 324F5F8
1w2d: TR0: txtmr: 0x0, msclk: 0x329554DC, qt: 0x329506F8 (19940ms)
1w2d: TR0 starting.
1w2d: TR0 receive SRB_FREE, state=2, if_state=6
R4(config-if)#
1w2d: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface TokenRing0, changed state to initializing
1w2d: %TR-3-OPENFAIL: Unit 0, open failed: Lobe Test, failed
1w2d: %TR-3-BADSTART: Unit 0, Start completion and wrong idb state - state=
0
1w2d: tms380_periodic: TR0 create process TR Init with pid#94
1w2d: TR0: reset from 30900C6
1w2d: TR0: txtmr: 0x0, msclk: 0x329564C8, qt: 0x329506F8 (24012ms)
1w2d: TR0 starting.
1w2d: TR0 receive SRB_FREE, state=2, if_state=6
1w2d: %TR-3-OPENFAIL: Unit 0, open failed: Lobe Test, failed
1w2d: %TR-3-BADSTART: Unit 0, Start completion and wrong idb state - state=
0
1w2d: TR0: reset from 30900C6
1w2d: TR0: txtmr: 0x0, msclk: 0x329572AC, qt: 0x329506F8 (27568ms)
etc.
