Set span tree root [ vlan no] decreases the prioority by one from the
existing root. If the root priority is 32768 then it reduces the priority to
8192.

Assuming the case Switch A-------Siwtch B,

If Switch A is the root with priority 32768 for vlan 10, and if you apply
the command set spantree root [ vlan 10] on Switch B then the priority get
reduced to 8192
If Switch A is the root with some other priority say 8000 and if you apply
the same command on B now the Vlan 10 priority will get reduced by one
(7999)

Where as if you set the spantree priority to 0, you are forcing that switch
to be the root for that vlan and you are not allwoing any other switches to
be the root.

Now if you set the priority of Switch A to be 0 then if you apply the "set
spant root" command on Switch B , switch B will not accept the command
because it cannot furthur reduce it's priority lesser than the existing
roots priority (that is 0).

This functionality holds good only for 802.1d spanning tree.

Cheers,
Ahamed
