I think on Ethernet or multi-access networks Dense mode is appropriate.
The problem was I was under the impression that when an RP is configured
that the interface configured for the RP also joined the multicast group.
That is not the case. Without computers on the network in order to test your
group by a ping you must manually configure an interface on the router to
join the group using:
router(config-if)#ip igmp join-group 229.10.10.10
That fixed the pinging problem for me.
