Tried that already, does not work (multiring ipon all token ring
interfaces and only on r4's token ring interface). The fun thing is
that I setup the cat 3900 with an ip address, 172.16.3.5/24 ( on the
same subnet). I can see its arp request for 172.16.3.1 (r1) on the
ethernet interface of (r3) 172.16.3.2 when I run debug arp. I just
can't ping from 172.16.3.2 to 172.16.3.1.

and in response to the first post I think you meant multiring ip in the
token ring interface of r4. and as answered above that does not do the
trick
