Perhaps Sheref was experiencing a bug. I have a fuzzy recollection of a bug
in which I had to disable spanning-tree in a redundant FEC config. I've
also experienced a bug that caused port flapping on connected devices where
I've either had to disable spanning-tree or enable portfast as workarounds.

Sheref,
You must be mistaken, you never disable spanning tree under the scenario
that you speak of. FEC is configured between switches, why would you
disable spanning tree in that situation.
I know FEC is able on nics, but I don't think that is what you are
talking about.
