        zheng,
As far as I know you cannot x-modem an IOS to the Cisco routers. The
usual method is to use TFTP to load the IOS with the command 'copy TFTP
flash'. Since your router IOS image is gone, I would recommend getting your
3640 on the same network segment with a TFTP server which has a copy of the
IOS you are using. (Side note; if you have another 3640 or other router with
the IOS you need, you can copy it's IOS to the TFTP server with the command
'copy flash TFTP', and then copy it to the bad 3640. Also, the good router
can be made to perform the TFTP server function, although the commands for
this elude me at the moment, I think it is something like 'service TFTP
???'.)
I'm not familiar with the 3600 series routers, so I don't know it's
response to corrupted flash images. My experience with Cisco products has
been that when a router cannot load an IOS image from flash, it will come up
in ROM monitor mode. Once the router is up in ROM monitor, it is possible to
direct it to load flash from a TFTP server. The exact method for this also
eludes me at this time. (It's still early here in Seattle, WA.) A look at
the CD-ROM or cisco TAC info under system management should provide the
details you need for the 3640.
I apologise that I could not be more assistance, but I hope this
helps you look in the right direction for a complete solution.
        Mike
