atm question

Hi,

I run into two ATM commands do not know when to use them.

1. Caslow's book put "lane auto-config-atm-address" under int atm 0,
  I also found this from some other resources, but some did not. Based on
my lab experience, you DO NOT need this command to make lane working. So
could anyone point out to me WHEN it is a MUST to use this command? or you
don't need this command at all?

2. When to use "ATM Preferred Phy A" command?
