Thank-you. As always seems to happen, the solution presents itself shortly
after I email this list. It appears to be more a function of the last mile
cabling to the affected modems. The horribly intermittent nature of the
problem and variance in the level of diagnostics available with AT command
set on the different modem chipsets make it hard too.

Appreciate your insights.
