As per Cisco for an ISP:
CSR - P router
ASR 9K - PE router

But its not necessary, we can use 9K as P router too. I have worked to
setup an ISP which has ASR 9K as both P and PE.
There are some features specific to 9K only in XR family.
The book suggested by Mohammed is a good source for understanding XR.
