Hi Gaurav,
Q1:
mdt default is used to setup the GRE tunnels between the PE routers. If
used without mdt data you multicast traffic is encapsulated into this
address and always send to all PE routers sharing this mdt default address.
mdt Data is used to optimize this in SSM multicast. This is done so that if
a PE is not interested in that traffic it will not receive that traffic.
Traffic with mdt data gets encapsulated into the give range. If you look at
the S,G entries in the core you will see the moment you start send
mutlicast traffic from a customer the PE will send out a S,G of the mdt
data address. With mdt data a RP is not needed as it is source specific
multicast
Q2:
I cannot see the purpose of doing that. You will have two separte multicast
networks. That is of the customer with its own RP and multicast tree and a
separate topology of the service provider core with and RP if you do not
use SSM
Q3:
in IOS XR the configuration is in general the same a different syntax
offcourse. The only thing I would like to highlight is when mdt data kicks
in. With IOS it is done immediatly but in IOS XR you can specify the
bandwidht threshold it needs to hit before switching over
Kind regards,
Maarten Vervoorn
