I would suggest that what you are doing wrong is mixing your layer 2 and
layer 3 routing. Why are you letting spanning tree come into a layer 3
routing decision? Your HSRP is to provide clients (hosts, other devices)
that don't speak routing protocols a way to have multiple paths out, it
shouldn't be factored into the decision process for devices that speak the
same routing protocol.
