What is the importance of "import map abc" under ip vrf xyz.

I am running a mpls vpn with the route-map matching a prefix-list of vpn
sites prefixes. This rout-map is refrenced under ip vrf xyz with import map
abc. Doesn't matter what prefixes I allow or deny the vpn works.

Please some one could explain.
