What you are mentioning are companies that do COLO locations, not Enterprise Data Centers.....
Large Enterprise Companies building GREEN data Centers are doing just this.

I didn't mean to offend anyone, but just giving some insist to newer ways of building state of the art data centers. Here is a link to a video that shows the MTP/FAT and Hydra Cables and how they help in the new Data Centers.. skip to about 12 minutes into the video just to see the cables, but the entire video is interesting as well.

I do not work for nor mean to associate myself with this company, but they had the video that I liked.

I just helped finish a major data center using this technology.

Now this is all pertinent to the location and reason that you need fibre. New Data Centers are designed with density in mind and therefore use newer but older ideas of fibre connections. New fibre patch panels use FAP's and mTP cables. Which are essentially 12 strands of fiber closely grouped into a single FAP connection which then you have a MTP connection which is like the old octal cable which is a signal connector that's sits into a 6 pair or 4 pair LC or SC connectors that connect to your equipment on the racks/cabinets.

If you do a bing/google search for MTP fibre connectors you will find them. Obviously these are SmF or mmF fibre runs.
