Julian, yes when you cable the switches together with the stacking cables they will stack automatically, however it is always a good idea to manually configure your stack master. It's always a good idea to read the cisco doc on the configuration as well, there are some caveats but seeing that you say the switches are new you shouldn't have in problems.
