In my corner of the world it's a method of accessing the device outside
of normal VTY access. So, we use Avocent cyclades serial switches to
connect to the console of our gear. Whenever I have a minor change I may
SSH directly into my router and make the change. Whenever I'm doing
major work and want to avoid any risk of being remotely cut off (IOS
upgrade, major routing protocol maintenance, ACL work) I use my out of
band method to establish a connection to the console remotely. I can
access the cyclades via SSH/Telnet or HTTP(s) or even POTS with a modem.
