Resource distribution would be the major one.
A router would typically have resources allocated predominantly to routing
tables, etc while a switch would have its allocated mainly to vlan DBs, MAC
DB's, etc.
Ofcourse, as you have mentioned, a few protocols would only run on either
and not the other.
