If you can legally obtain IOU, I'm of the opinion it's vastly superior
to GNS3. It consumes much less resources and is much less buggy.
However, the problem with IOU as of right now is that it's not legally
available outside Cisco.

The situation will change in the future however. Cisco saw the light
(and I'm guessing Greg Ferro's petition for the educational
licensing). The first step they made was Learning Labs, which are
available for "rent" now. In the future, Cisco will support
customer-built topologies, which will be a great learning tool for
CCIE studies.
