Re: Is CCIE loosing its value?

As a CCIE for nearly 15 years I've heard this statement at least 1000
times. I heard if when the CCIE numbers topped 5000, 10,000, 15,000, etc,
etc. Search Google by date range, and you'll see the same arguments people
are making today for and against the CCIE 3, 6 or even 9 years ago.

As far as demand goes it's still not that hard to get a high-paying job as
a network engineer with a CCIE certification in any major city in the US
if you're a good network engineer. In fact, I'm amazed at what a strong
CCNP or even a strong CCNA can make today here in the Seattle, WA area.
The Cisco certification is just another advantage you have when applying
for a position, but it shouldn't be the sole thing you try to rely on to
get a job. That being said I have seen people use their Cisco
certification to open doors that wouldn't have been open to them due to
lack of real-world experience. I worked with someone 10 years ago and
just bumped into them at the CCIE party at Cisco Live this year that was a
dual CCIE but couldn't buy a beer due to being underage. When we
interviewed him he was bagging groceries at a grocery store but had taken
some CCNA classes at the local Cisco Academy and said he wanted to get his
CCIE one day. He did that and more within a couple years ;-)

Good luck with your studies!
