Hello,
I think it depends from person to person due to the human nature, but in my case:
1. I don't think to CCIE as "a must do" thing while I learn; rather I prefer to think that I'm learning for myself not for CCIE. This keeps me motivated, because I do it for me not for Cisco exam. Also I did attempt some written exams for other Cisco certification. For example I learn for CCIE RS, and this path overlaps with knowledge needed for CCIP, so I took the BGP and MPLS exam. This confirms to me that I have the knowledge and give myself trust in my powers. Not talking that I have another certification and prolonged the old ones.
2. I did failed once the CCIE RS lab. It's not easy :( to live with failed feeling, but I got over it. I took a pause of about 1-2 months, focus on different things that I neglected during preparation and start over with fresh "eyes", looking to some tasks in a different way.
This works pretty fine for me.
Cheers,
Calin
