Which Cisco switches in particular are you asking about? Many of their
switches support shaping on layer 2 interfaces. Also, there are other
options for managing QoS besides straight shaping. Here's a link which
compares shaping with policing (which may be applicable in your situation -
I just don't know your particulars):
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk543/tk545/technologies_tech_note09186a0080

that the physical link speed is greater than the allowed traffic on the
link), you may want to look at using hierarchical queueing.

Subject: Shaping on L2 ports of Switches

Hi,

With MPLS we all know that Service Provider's can provide us L2 circuits. So
what we can do is, we can put two switches in both of our remote sites and
extend the vlans from one site to another.

For our requirements we need to shape the bandwidth for different traffic
types going through this L2 circuit. But any of the Cisco switches support
shaping on L2 ports. Is there any reason why Cisco is not introducing
shaping on switches?

Thx,
Sud
