Why MPLS

Hi All

I just started MPLS studies . Got an idea of how labels are assigned , how
labels are distributed etc .
But my question is :

Without MPLS ; we perform lookup in IP routing table ...... With MPLS ; we
assign labels and now lookup is done in label table and necessary action is
taken ( pop / swap etc) .

So how does it becomes faster ? How does it become better .

Yeah ; I understood the fact that core is now BGP free ..

But instead of doing IP lookup ; we are doing label lookup now . So how and
where are we saving ?

Please clearify
