Remember the 4 steps of classic spanning tree in order for it to arrive at a loop free Layer 2 path.

Step 1 - Elect a root bridge

Step 2 - On each non root bridge elect one Root port

Step 3 - On each link elect one designated port

Step 4 - All other ports are non-designated (blocking)

So the function of the designated port - like the root port - is to forward traffic on the loop free path.
