Hey John,
Are you running vSphere? This is assuming that you are running virtual center / vSphere... What you should be focusing your effort on is going to be how you set up your vSwitch.
You need to have an IP on your service console port that is reachable (ESXi does not have one) and this will allow you to access to the service console. I am guessing that you have vlans?!?! Your "physical" switch / router will need to do any routing so make sure your trunk's are functioning properly.
VM kernel port - This provide's connectivity allowing management of the host.
Virtual machine port group - this allows virtual machines access to other virtual machines or the "physical" network.
