Re: need advice on the following questions

Hi,

The BPDUs between 802.1d and 802.1w (RSTP) are different essentially for compatibility reasons. Since 802.1d uses only 2 bits in the type field, and 802.1w uses the other 6 bits instead, it makes it easy for the switch to tell who it is talking to on the other side. 802.1w is compatible with both kinds, and it needs to know what is on the other end to adapt properly. As far as what bits specifically are "on" or "off" and what exactly they mean, I would say it is RFC time for you my friend. I hope that helps.

Thanks Marko ,

my second question was how to explain RSTP mechanism in more detail i mean
in bit lavel .
as 80.2.1D uses on tc and tca bits of bpdu type field where as RSTP uses all
8 bits .

if you can explain me or point me to any reference which explains how type
field is handled in RSTP . that would be great help.
