Taking the lab of another CCIE track can renew a previous CCIE you have. We
have asked in the past. You are not allowed to take the same exam again
unless you let your certification lapse. Who wants to do that ;)
Anthony was spot on.

Guys,
I'd open a case with the Cert support team to verify my interpretation.
In cases like this no one wants to take a risk.

Anthony,
According to Cisco website again:
http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/ccie/recert/index.html
CCIEs Are Required to Recertify Every Two Years
Active CCIE status shows your commitment to maintaining expert-level
knowledge in an industry critical to the success of virtually every
organization. CCIEs are encouraged to continually expand their technical
knowledge and are required to* pass a recertification exam* every two
years.
If you do not complete your recertification before the deadlines, your
CCIE
certification will be suspended and you and your employer will lose the
benefits associated with your expert status. You have one year to
reinstate
your CCIE status before you becomes inactive and must begin the
certification process all over again.
To maintain active status, every 24 months CCIEs are required to pass
one of
the following: any CCIE written exam of their choosing, a CCIE lab exam,
or
either of the CCDE exams.
If you can provide documentation stating otherwise this is directly
from
Cisco's website and applies to all CCIE tracks.
I personnaly believe that CCIE should have to recertify by taking the
lab
again. Probably would eliminate many becuase of the cost but in the end
I
believe you will have stronger engineers, and since the lab exam topics
are
closely related to job functions of Senior level engineer.
But if you can provide documentation stating otherwise. I would have to
go
by what Cisco has documented on the website, unless they posted
inaccurate
information.
Warm regards,
John Matijevic
