Khaled,

True. You cannot change it for a specific external prefix but from an
exam point of view it's good to know three important points:

1- Read the question carefully sometime the question is something like
"ensure 10.0.0.0 is seen with an AD of 171"; you have the prefix as an
external route so the distance command would not work. You however
should realize that using the "distance eigrp" command you can change
the AD for ALL EIGRP prefixes. But does it break any rules or
requirements? If you read my question carefully the answer is No it
doesn't. Actually as long as 10.0.0.0 is seen with an AD of 171 you're
just fine :) who cares what's gonna happen to the rest of your
prefixes?! But be make sure you're not running into any routing loops.

2- In Cisco IOS we have 2 different commands to change the EIGRP AD; the
"distance eigrp" command and the "distance" command. Both commands can
be used at the same time but the latter will fine tune an action taken
by the first one. Again only effective on internal routes.

3- An old bug! Actually from a technical stand point it's not a "bug"
it's just nonsense by design!...everyone says the "distance" command
does not work with EIGRP external routes. O.K. fair enough, but please
run the "sh ip access" command and see you have hits! The ACL's counter
is going up and the actual command does nothing! It can easily freak you
out on the actual lab.

Subject: OT: Distance command and EIGRP external routes

hi,

even distance <distance> <source> <wildcard> applied, the value distance
value specified is not applied to EIGRP external routes. however, it is
applied to Internal EIGRP routes.

Is this the correct behavior?

the command reference for 12.4T does not specify this behavior!

regards,
Khalid
