Thank you for all your suggestions - silly and otherwise!
I have now found the solution.

In the 'Connection - Telnet' category, untick the box for - Return Key
Sends Telnet New Line instead of ^M

Or perhaps for all you unbelievers out there, perhaps you'd like to tick it
and see the effect...
