Personally I like the "wait 6 months from the release then upgrade"
approach. This keeps the code relatively new but gives them time to iron out
bugs. As Uyota said, check the release notes too and ensure that the 6 month
old code didn't have bugs that were fixed. Note that if you need any new
features to support your environment's requirements you may need to go for a
more recent release, that's the exception.
