I wouldn't look at this as an "attack" on dynamips guys. Many vendors
employ similar licensing models. Citrix uses it on their load balancing and
firewalling appliances. CheckPoint uses the same. Even the Cisco ACE at one
point was going to allow features based on license key. I think they went
away from it on that platform. Anyway, I think you can look at this as just
a more targeted licensing method. You know there's some actuary deep in the
bowels of Cisco making 7 figures to tell the product managers how to
"maximize profit".

Tom,
No one has promised it to be a fun, have they? It was no descent
Dynamips version in 2005 when I hit my first lab attempt. It wasn't much
better in the end of 2006 when I hit my last attempt. You guys are lucky
to have this chance to save some money for your families. Too bad it is
not gonna last forever.
One can mark Cisco greedy for changing a licensing policy but how about
change in technologies? Dynamips will always be behind should Cisco
change a gear set for the RS/SP labs and we are back at square one with
rack rentals, home labs or otherwise. Look at the Wireless track; you
have to have that gear to pass! :-)
I use Dynamips quite often to give a quick go on some interesting
scenarios; it is a VERY convenient tool. And I use it for my SP preps.
But I have yet to click on a "Donation" button on their home page. Have
you? Maybe they need just a bit of our support to catch up with giant
Cisco? :-)
Anyways, with Dynamips gone, we have an option to move along or we can
stick to it and cry about unfairness ... a personal choice to make. :-)
My .02 AUD incl GST.
