It will not work. Port itself appears up but int switchport reports port as inactive:

Rack1SW1(config-if-range)#swi a v 1004
% Warning: port will be inactive in non-ethernet VLAN
% Warning: port will be inactive in non-ethernet VLAN
Rack1SW1(config-if-range)#do show int f0/1 swi | i 1004
Access Mode VLAN: 1004 (Inactive)
Rack1SW1(config-if-range)#swi a v 1005
% Warning: port will be inactive in non-ethernet VLAN
% Warning: port will be inactive in non-ethernet VLAN
Rack1SW1(config-if-range)#do show int f0/1 swi | i 1004
Rack1SW1(config-if-range)#do show int f0/1 swi | i 1005
Access Mode VLAN: 1005 (Inactive)

Typical IP packet debugs occur for this type of traffic as well..
