The Network Academy courses use a simulator (Packet tracer?) which I'm told
is quite good. Includes switches as well as routers and I think it allows
packet captures.
If your friend does not have much previous exposure to networks (and is not
working in networking at the moment), you might like to explain to them a
little about a real network you have worked on; which of the protocols he is
reading about are used there and why another is not etc. Sketch out a
diagram they can refer to, and as they progress form questions around it.
Get them used to drawing out diagrams, and troubleshooting using them.
Might help give them more confidence that they can easily apply the
knowledge they are acquiring through their studies.
Paul.
