I just did a "show ip traffic" on one of my 6509's and see a lot of encapsulation failed errors myself
SV-Dist-1#show ip traffic | in encap
Drop: 19611389 encapsulation failed, 0 unresolved, 0 no adjacency
According to Cisco this usually indicates that the router had no ARP request entry and therefore did not send a datagram
