If you're getting an ethernet handoff and don't need the functionalities of a router, using a layer 3 switch is your best option. Wire speed performance!
Keep in mind, you'll be limited in certain features using a switch, such as qos.

I would say the lowest cost "router" to do 1Gbps WAN would be a
Catalyst 3560G switch.
