Is there any difference in the negotiation? I seem to remember there
being something but I can't find it in the docs.

You can see pt-to-pt as a direct connection between 2 switches.
Practically it's a LAN segment with just 2 switches. The shared port
type is one where there are more than 2, hence not pt-to-pt anymore,
but shared.
