I asked Michael and he said that at the time there was no such thing
as the concept of the CCIE. You could take a practical exam starting
in January 1993. Michael passed it the first attempt. There was no
title connected to it.
Later that year that exam was converted or maybe a bit adjusted to the
CCIE program. Then Michael received his number as Cisco honored the
people that did the previous practical exam to be CCIE.
Michael described it as: There was a difference between passing the
exam and being registered as CCIE.
I have to recall as Michael was a bit vague in his communication :-)
