I think what he was referring to is a bug in like 12.4(10) where if you don't have both configured a certain way it can fail. I've only seen the bug once during the IE bootcamp, someone else hit it and they were stuck for a while. It was on mock lab1, but it can be replicated in other labs. The scenario is to configure a router to accept routes from a BB with the strongest auth possible and password of CISCO. To me this means:

Rack1R1(config-if)#do show run | s FastEthernet0/0|key chain
key chain RIP
 key 1
   key-string CISCO
interface FastEthernet0/0
 ip address 155.1.146.1 255.255.255.0
 ip rip authentication mode md5
 ip rip authentication key-chain RIP

What can happen is that the interface becomes bugged and requires to create accept and send lifetimes that are always valid, which would be the default if you hadn't configured anything at all.

try to duplicate using ios 12.4(2)T1 to see any error, but get nothing
