It's not the same as the RFC1918 ranges, and I think it's pretty dumb
for anyone to use these currently unallocated ranges in examples,
documentation and so on.

Just this week, 175/8 and 182/8 were allocated to APNIC for further
distribution within the region. Prior to the allocation, they were
just like 177/8. There's a strong chance that some time in the near
future, all of the references to 177/8 addresses you've seen in labs
will be some organisation's public IP address space.
