FYI - This is kind of how a deal like this goes down... for the record...
Other people can tell you their stories of their friends and of things
they'd like to do. I'm just telling you this is how things actually happen
and perhaps a little insight into why:
Now the trick is a for a Cisco Professional to be engaged with the Partner
100% doing whatever is asked to be done for the term of the contract.
Along with this email there was a stipulation of what I would do as a
contactor for the partner. There was also an agreement of how I would be
compensated for my efforts and for my availability for the term of the
contract.
I did exactly what was stipulated and I was available for an additional
consideration at a given rate in the event my services were further required
for any additional work beyond the initial agreement.
Now this is how it works and how it is done.
It is or at least was allowed by Cisco at some point as the company
obviously passed their audit as required by Cisco.
Myself I was hired for a given period of time and accepted employment and
was paid for services rendered.
Now - as it goes I did quite a few contracts with quite a few companies over
the years with regard to Cisco Networking.
If I had agreed to peel potatos and wash latrines for $1.00 per year no one
would complain about that either.
Now I don't know what state or country everyone is from - me I'm in Florida
and we call is a "Right to Work State" and that means I can work for anyone
who pays me.
Now if I happen to have a primary employer then I usually obtain permission
to "moonlight" as it is since I might like my primary job too and by no
means would ever disrespect an employer or misrepresent my availability.
Anybody ever wrote a book yet?
Who does the writer work for?
I've done this too as a "ghost-writer" and I again I clear with my employer
(who was a Cisco Partner by the way at the time) and I proceeded to perform
the stated task of that contract as per requirements for a given
consideration (umm.. $$$).
We all work for money.
We would not call it work if it were for fun....
My wife reminds me rather often of this when I'm exceeding the terms of my
employment and / or contracts by working greatly in excess of the stipulated
term (40 hours per most employers). However, I tend to enjoy my work and do
what must be done.
Anyway, here's a snippet from a the past from a Partner and some of the
terms and it incidently explains why this partner needed a contractor in the
first place:
Darby
The deal is absolutely in place and I am definitely not getting cold feet.
I'm sorry I did not get back to you on Friday, but please do not take this
to mean the deal is shakey. Unfortunately, because this is the first time
we have gone outside to recruit certifications, I don't have a canned
contract I can simply forward to you, otherwise you would already have it in
your hands. This is currently being written by our finance people. If you
have something that you would be happy with readily available, then lets get
that operational. Its really just a formality to make sure you are
comfortable with the arrangement.
The only correction I would make to your email below is with regards to your
comment about the $150K retainer fee. I pay $150K to hire CCIE's as
fulltime engineers; not for their certs. I'm sorry if this was not clear.
I would be VERY interested in talking to you about this. We may even be
interested in a trip out there to discuss it with you.
Alternatively, per your comment about $75ph rate, are you available to do
contract work? We have a working relationship already and you are processed
through our financial dept so there is nothing stopping us from moving
forward with engagements if you are up to it.
We have sufficient Cisco Experts, Professionals and Associates to fulfill
our Cisco partner requirements. The only part we need assistance with is
the FE2 role in IPC (I hired a guy and he signed his employment contract,
but last month announced that his wife wanted to return to India).
I believe Cisco does protect VARs across the board, not just for CCIE; but I
will confirm this today.
Darby, you have absolutely done everything I have asked you to do and you
have done so using only my word. I want you to know that I appreciate this
and that I do take these deals seriously. You WILL be paid per our
agreement. As a famous Floridian once said "I only have 2 things: my word
and my balls; and I don't break them for anybody" (sorry, very poorly
paraphrased).
I will get you a status on your check today. If you can please review this
email and confirm that we are on the same page. I am also very interested
in your response re: opportunities in your area.
