Gang -

For what it's worth - I don't think this will have that much of
a negative impact on the perception of the CCIE certification any time
soon. We all know that the CCIE shows expert-level knowledge as it
relates to hands-on abilities within that specific designation or
track. To me, the CCDE and CCA go hand-in-hand and are more "design"
focused - not necessarily showing the ability to configure and
troubleshoot. Back in 98 and 99 when I was at Cisco, shortly after
passing my R&S lab - I was doing more design work as a Cisco SE and
less hands on (I was really awesome at Visio and could rattle off
Cisco part numbers, but couldn't configure an IP address! -grin-).
After about 6 months - I literally forgot about 75% of what I studied
for to pass the lab - but I could design networks, conceptually, with
the best of them. Honestly, I'm not sure how Cisco can say that this
certification is more advanced than the CCIE - because it seems to me
like it's a different focus / skillset. Regardless, the CCIE is still
the certification to have - showing expert status and ability to
install, configure and troubleshoot. Now, over a year after announcing
the CCDE, there are still just 3 of them (from what I know) - that
means there are only 3 CCA candidates....so it's going to be a
veeerrrry long time before the CCDE or CCA have a major impact on the
CCIEs and their salaries / reputation. All-in-all - don't worry -
CCIEs still rock! ;-)
