Sub-interface details

Having configured 100 times and still was struggling to get it right in the
actual lab was not a good sign at-all. This is really stupid and though very
simple to configure, but, is there a good documentation which explains how to
configure sub-interfaces on a routers? When to use native vlan? When not to
use it? Do you have to shut/no-shut the interface for it to work?
