Backup interface for a PPPoFR

I am trying to do this and it never works.
R1======R2

R1 connected to R2 via S0/0 FR and s0/1 direct serial interface.
I configured Virtual template 1 on both routers, to run PPP over frame relay
and all is working fine, Both Links are up.

Virtual template is applied on the frame relay main interface.

Now I configure the Serial (s0/1) link as backup of FR link. As soon as i
shoudown the FR main interface, the backup (s0/1) is also shutdown and moved
to disabled state.
This problem can apparently be solved by applying the Virtual template on FR
point to point Subint.
Any reasoning?
