IMHO, no we will not be working on sample questions. I at least (perhaps
on my own, but I'll stand up for it) am firmly of the belief that if you
work through the workbook with the goal of UNDERSTANDING things, then you
will be overprepared for the lab, and thus able to answer any silly question
that gets thrown at you.

So if working on (insert appropriate vendor here) workbook does not build
your confidence to that level, then that is a problem LEARN and you will
know. Memorize, and you'll be hosed.

I kinda like that Scott!!!
If a candidate spends months and months learning the technology, those
points should be a breeze... even if they carry couple of points.. I know
quite a few who failed with that much margin...
All in all, I agree that its not a big deal and if you prepare right its to
your advantage.

I wonder though if the WB vendors going to include a select 5 questions as
part of their respective mock labs.. or if they should..
Knowing how tough the wb are... I can oonly guess the questions would test
even more...
Lol.. not let the candidate sit for the mock lab if they cannot answer the
question... a true lab experience (minus the $$$.. or maybe plus)

"Why" would be subjective. I don't think it'll get that.

The other thing to look at is that you're getting points for these things..
That means that your exam will have LESS points you need to worry about.
This SHOULD be easy stuff!

i agree ... just pointing out that it will cause undue stress on people ...
i personally think the questions will likely be based on the technical tasks
on the specific exam the candidate gets ... i.e. did you know and understand
"why" you configured something in such a way as opposed to just doing
something because you were told to based on how the config looks ... just my
2 cents ... but they should post some actual examples so that people can
gauge them.

People don't like change. Period. but ya know, this should be viewed as
simply another part of "Anything is fair game" that we've had the mantra of
for years.

If you are going to sit for the CCIE Lab exam, you SHOULD be able to tell
something about different pieces. Nobody is going to ask you to "explain
the significance and history of spanning-tree on today's networks". While
that's definitely open-ended, it may also take a two hour answer.

However, if I asked you "Please tell me the default OSPF network type on a
frame-relay physical interface and what timers are associated with that" are
you telling me that after months/years of studying for the lab exam that you
could not answer that?

And even that may be more complicated than what they ask. The object is to
weed out the "absolutely clueless" e.g. folks who go to memorize the exam
and not accomplish anything.

If anyone here happens to be one of those types, I will at least applaud you
for making an effort reading ongoing technical discussions, but otherwise I
think we can all agree that's a bad thing. These questions are not designed
to trip you up, or otherwise test your grasp of the the nuances of the
english language.

Any real candidate SHOULD NOT have any difficulty with the questions from
what I understand of them.

But yes, it's something different. No, it doesn't affect your lab time (you
get points for these, this should be GOOD, EASY points!). No, there's no
additional studying you have to do. Whether you type it in or say something
(1-3 word answers) shouldn't make any difference?

Yes, there's always the chance that you'll be asked about something you
would typically have to look up when doing a lab. So yes, you MAY lose one
of these questions (just thinking raw possibilities here) but if you missed
all five of them because you'd have to look those things up, I would venture
to say you would have an issue with a lab exam as well be looking up too
much!

Don't stress out about these things. Just concentrate on knowing the
technologies and you'll be fine!

I'm surprised they are announcing a fairly vague change to the lab exam on
Jan 14th ... and making it effective Feb 1st (just got this in the
Learning@Cisco news letter) ... seems like short notice regardless of how
hard the questions will be ... my exam slips in just before that but i sure
wouldn't want to have the stress of the "unknown" with only 2 weeks out to
my exam ... i feel bad for those booked at the start of Feb who are
following a structure they set out months ago and now need to re-group and
re-read some theory which will take away from their last hours prep on the
practical.

I'm not impressed with this ... even though it doesn't impact me at this
time ...

Well there is not much detail so far imo. It would be nice for a sample
question or two from Cisco. At least that way we could get a idea of how
long the questions will take to answer, how much detail is required and
maybe even how they are scored.

If each question takes 5 minutes roughly, that's around 20-25 minutes . Will
they be any changes to the amount of lab questions to compensate?

I think its a good idea overall. We just need some more insight and details.
